Is your home energy efficient? Does your home have adequate insulation? Have you ever considered superinsulation? It is predicted that the cost of heating a home or business in the coming winter of 2008 - 2009 will double from last years cost. Given the current state of the economy and the availability of fossil fuels, do you think things will be any better in the coming years? If you are a home owner located in Ohio or any other state the question I believe you should be asking: Does my home have enough insulation? What would be the benefits to a home owner in Ohio for adding insulation as a home improvement project?
"Although some home improvement elements could be argued as a recouped investment when one considers the resale market value of the home (e.g. kitchen & bath upgrades), most remodeling projects do not recoup their total investment. In addition, most new products used in the remodeling will age and depreciate. Improving energy efficiency is the one remodeling element that as an investment will have a continued annual return regardless of the resale market value(and installing additional insulation is the best and first place to start)." Located in Old Snowmass Colorado, where winter temperatures reach -40 degrees, sits the Rocky Mountain Institute. The Rocky Mountain Institute is a totally energy efficient building, well insulated, superinsulated, and even with temperatures reaching -40 degrees, has only the occasional need for their two small wood burning stoves to heat the 4000 square foot building. The building is super insulated and uses passive solar for heating. The building is also cool in the summer without the need of an air conditioner. The Rocky Mountain Institute puts out a series of Home Energy Briefs that explain how to make your home more energy efficient. Another good resource for making your home more energy efficient is the SEER Report "Strategies for Energy Efficient Remodeling"
It used to be considered cost prohibitive to do "green" home improvements and remodeling. Not so today. Although the cost associated with green home improvements and achieving an Energy Star Rating for your home is higher than that of traditional remodeling and construction, the cost of operating a home with an Energy Star Rating is 10-20% lower. Energy Star rated homes and buildings also sell for an average of $61 per square foot more than comparable buildings. Commercial buildings with a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating sells for an average of $171 per square foot more than comparable buildings. Think about it, your home with a proper amount of insulation and maybe even superinsulated, with Energy Star rated windows, doors and appliances will be a valuable asset to not only you, but when the time comes to sell, a valuable home in a market full of not so energy efficient and expensive to heat and cool homes.
